Cycling

Riding in the Great Glen

Whether you use us as a base, or a stopping off point on a tour such as Lands End - John O'Groats, the hostel has great facilities for cyclists: secure storage, bike wash, laundry, a drying room for wet kit, and a well-stocked hostel store.

There are lots of options for day rides around here: there are easy sections of the Great Glen Way which are good for young riders (for example Laggan Locks to Fort Augustus); hilly forest tracks; and quiet single track roads.

Sustrans route 78 runs through here, and we're only 20 minutes' drive from the mountain bike trails at Nevis Range.

Some favourite cycling routes from the hostel

  • Loch Oich Circuit: 12 miles almost entirely off-road on the Great Glen Way and returning via Invergarry on the Great Glen Way alt. route, including a section of easy singletrack
  • Loch Lochy Circuit: half off-road, half on, using the Great Glen Way and A82 (26 miles) Up the hill opposite the hostel: a 400m climb zigzagging up forest roads to fine views across the Great Glen from the top
  • Loch Garry circuit: using forest tracks on the south side of the loch as far as Greenfield, crossing the loch at Torr na Carraidh, and returning on the Kinloch Hourn and A87 roads (22 miles). Can be extended to cross at Poulary, west of Tomdoun
  • To Kinloch Hourn and back: 60 miles return road ride through peaceful Glen Garry mostly on single track road
  • A87/A82 circuit: via the 'Map of Scotland' viewpoint, Bun Loyne junction, and Invermoriston (50 miles)
  • The Corrieyairack Pass, returning via Glen Shirra and the A86 (67 miles and over 1000m of ascent). Please ask at Reception for more information. If you use a GPS bike computer, we can provide GPX files of these routes.
